I graduated from Bristol University in 1998, and did my LPC in Guilford until 1999 before going travelling for eight months. When I came home I set about applying for my training contract, and initially the contract I went for was with Lawrence Tucketts which later merged with TLT. The firm I applied and got a job with is very different to what TLT is now, and this only serves to highlight the unique way in which TLT approaches the business of law.

My training contract covered property, litigation, employment and family, and in 2002 I qualified at TLT, specialising in family law. I really wanted to stay at the firm for a number of reasons. Firstly, there is high quality ongoing training available, and that – coupled with lots of hands on experience – was an important factor. Secondly, there is the fact of TLT's high calibre clients and the work we carry out here. TLT also has a very good regional reputation.

I've been at TLT for 10 years now and I continue to enjoy my work on a daily basis. My cases are varied but challenging – ranging from divorce and finances, to cohabitation, pre-nups, and children.

I enjoy the training on offer, which happens both internally and externally. I also feel there is plenty of supervision when I need it, but equally we are encouraged to progress our own careers as individuals. There is a positive attitude from colleagues to wanting to move up the ladder and become an associate.

Another nice difference at TLT is that our offices are open plan, and this in turn creates a transparent working environment. The Partners are all approachable and there is an open door policy very much in force. Across the departments too, the teams are friendly and work well together, and there is a sense of cohesion throughout the firm. It's certainly not a stuffy, old-fashioned legal environment.

TLT is an ambitious firm, always looking to grow and expand, and we're also very client focused – it's all about good service delivery. But as well as the nice working environment and atmosphere here, we also have lots of opportunities to do things outside of specific roles and the core legal work – including getting involved in the charity committee, volunteer work, socials and sports.
